Scholarships for the Seeking
These are scholarships whose deadlines have passed, but will be available for next year.
For Both Undergraduates and Graduates:
- Society of Women Engineers - Deadline: February 1. For women enrolled in an accredited engineering progam. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $10,000 each. See website for additional requirements.
- Anita Borg Scholarship - Deadline: January 20. For female senior undergraduates and all grad students studying Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field major. $10,000.
For Undergraduates:
- Microsoft Tutition Scholarship - Deadline: January 15. For students majoring in Computer Science or Computer Engineering. Targeting female students, underrepresented minority students, and students with disabilities.
- Committee on the Status of Women in Computing Research - Deadline: February 15. This is NOT a scholarship, but a summer research opportunity. Targeting women, but members of either gender may apply.
- Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship - Deadline: February 15. Targeting students with physics, materials science, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, or engineering majors, but other majors may apply as well.
- Texas Space Grant Consortium - Deadline: March 10. For Juniors and Seniors. Stressing Excellence in academics, participation in space education projects, participation, in research projects, and exhibited leadership qualities. Must attend a TSGC member institution (Rice University is a member).
- ShellScholarships deadline: February 28, 2006. Open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors in engineering, physics, and geology to compete for this scholarship. The scholarship is worth $5,000 per year.
- IT-Satree: Women Using Technology for Community Concern a summer internship program in Thailand for women who are majoring in computer science and electrical engineering. The eight-week internship, supported by a $2500 travel and cost-of-living stipend and coordinated by Kenan Institute Asia, will place women studying computer science and engineering in internships with non-governmental agencies involved in Thai economic development. The deadline for application is March 6.
- Columbia Crew Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship Deadline: March 10. The $1,000 scholarships are awarded to juniors and seniors whose studies may lead to careers in space-related fields. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of excellence in academics, participation in space education projects, and participation in research projects.
For Graduates:
- Texas Space Grant Consortium Fellowship - Deadline: February 17. $5000, renewable for up to 3 years. Encouraging graduate study in space science and engineering. Applications from women and underrepresented students are encouraged. Must attend a TSGC member institution (Rice University is a member).
- Texas Space Grant Consortium Fellowship - Deadline: February 17. $5000, renewable for up to 3 years. Encouraging graduate study in space science and engineering. - NSF Graduate Fellowship (GRFP) The National Science Foundation aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the United States and to reinforce its diversity by offering approximately 1,000 graduate fellowships in this competition. The Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based master�s or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are at the early stages of their graduate study. The Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) invests in graduate education for a cadre of diverse individuals who demonstrate their potential to successfully complete graduate degree programs in disciplines relevant to the mission of the National Science Foundation.
- Semiconductor Research Corporation Deadline: February 15. SRC Fellowships provide full tuition and fees and a stipend of $1,950/month for up to five years of doctoral study. Fellowships also include travel expenses for the GFP Annual Conference as well as an unrestricted annual gift of $2,000 for use by the student's faculty advisor in support of the student.
International Travel ScholarshipsDeadline: March 6, 2006 All applications are due to the Office of International Programs, 1st floor, Student Center.
Interested students should submit:
- 2 page statement about their plans for the use of the award
- A budget, including other sources of funding to be received.
- Two letters of recommendation
- On a cover page, include name, phone number, email address, and college.
- Applicants planning to study abroad (any program involving transfer of credit back to Rice) must also submit the appropriate paperwork and program application through the Office of International Programs, in compliance with the appropriate deadlines.
- Applicants planning to work abroad are responsible for obtaining their own jobs and must include in their written statement relevant details about their assignment. (Students participating in the BUNAC or Council Exchanges Work Abroad programs must simply indicate that they will find work when they arrive in the country.) Students are also responsible for obtaining all necessary work visas required by the country in which they are working.
- Applicants planning independent travel must submit a tentative itinerary and provide indication of the feasibility of their proposed project.
- Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee. The committee will select finalists from the applications and conduct interviews. The recipient will be expected to produce a report to the selection committee upon their return.
- Kathryn Leebron Smyth TRAVEL FELLOWSHIP -- The Leebron Smyth Fellowship provides support for an undergraduate student to participate in an international internship, international travel, study or research abroad, or other international program. $2000 will be awarded to a current Rice undergraduate. Graduating seniors are not eligible to apply. Students are encouraged to submit proposals for creative international experiences that reflect their intellectual and personal passions.
- Darrell M. Whitley SUMMER WORK ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP -- The Darrell M. Whitley Summer Work Abroad Scholarship is intended to assist undergraduate students with the travel costs associated with working abroad. Two scholarships of up to $1000 each will be awarded. Those who plan to work abroad, in either an internship or casual job, may apply for a scholarship to help defer airfare or other costs associated with taking a particular job. Applicants must be returning to Rice as an undergraduate for the following fall semester, and the recipients cannot use the scholarship for summer academic or study abroad programs. Applicants must also demonstrate that they have a job or will be able to secure a job once they receive the award.
- Brotzen SUMMER TRAVEL AWARD -- The Brotzen Award is a unique opportunity to investigate your personal passion in an international setting. The Committee is seeking creative, independently-spirited proposals, that need not be related to the applicant's major field of study. Applicants interested in countries off the beaten path will be given preference, other considerations being equal. This award is based on merit rather than need. Approximately $2500 will be awarded for one summer studying in a foreign country. Current Rice junior or "even sophomores" are encouraged to apply.
