[IT-Satree: Women Using Technology for Community Concerns is a summer internship program in Thailand for women who are majoring in computer science and electrical engineering. The eight-week internship, supported by a $2500 travel and cost-of-living stipend and coordinated by Kenan Institute Asia, will place women studying computer science and engineering in internships with non-governmental agencies involved in Thai economic development. Through the internships, students will provide technical, IT-related support such as website design, database design, IT networks set-up and maintenance, and basic computer skills training. Internships will be located both in and outside Bangkok with hosts including KIAsia itself, businesses affected by the December 2004 Tsunami, and Community-Based Technology and Learning Centers. Upon return, students will present their summer internship experiences at a one-day conference and learn about future opportunities to continue their involvement with technology in a social and global context. The women selected for IT-Satree will participate in a two-week pre-departure orientation program at Rice that will include courses on Thai culture and society and the technology required for the summer internships.

Students will provide technical, IT-related support such as website design, database design, IT networks set-up and maintenance, and basic computer skills training. Internships will be located both in and outside Bangkok with three possible hosts, the first being KIAsia itself. At KIAsia, interns will provide technical support to several non-government organizations. The second set of internships will be with the Business Advisory Centers that support small and medium-sized businesses affected by the December 2004 Tsunami. The remaining interns will be placed with Community-Based Technology and Learning Centers, allowing students to train Thai technical instructors about applications that they will, in turn, teach to local participants.

Applicants should have an interest in technological application in a social and global context. Preference will be given to freshmen and sophomores, although juniors are eligible to apply. Applicants should be studying computer science or electrical engineering and must have completed at least Comp 210. The deadline for application is March 6.
