Kathi Bowles Scholarship for Women in Computing

Introduction & History Every year, the Houston chapter of the Association for Women in Computing (AWC - Houston) award s one or more scholarships to outstanding students pursuing an undergraduate degree or masters degree in a computer-related field. The actual number of scholarships and the amount(s) depend on fundraising activities held throughout the year. The AWC - Houston Chapter scholarship was named to honor the memory of one of its members, Kathi Bowles, and to promote advanced education in the field of technology. Kathi Bowles received her bachelor's degree from Auburn University, where she had received many undergraduate honors. Following graduation, Kathi worked as a systems analyst and project leader for a major oil company. She then took a position as a system consultant for a Big Eight accounting firm. Throughout her career, Kathi's peers regarded her as an outstandin g professional. In addition to her career, Kathi was very active in volunteer work with children and her church. Kathi Bowles died in 1987, at the age of thirty.

Purpose: The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize women pursuing a technology degree and contributing to their high school, university or community in the areas of service and leadership. Over the past 10 years, AWC has provided $60,000 in scholarships fo r female students pursuing technology degrees. Awards Ceremony: The scholarship recipients are honored along with women who have made an outstanding contribution in computer-related fields at our Top Houston Women in Technology Gala. Gala proceeds benefit the Kathi Bowles scholarship fund. Scholarship recipients must agree to attend the Gala and associated receptions, and be photographed for inclusion in the AWC - Houston website and literature.
